Abstract
This article puts forward the case for valid research into teaching, using language teaching as a particular example, and highlights the need for those involved in teaching to be familiar with the hallmarks of good research. It argues that an awareness of the basic principles of valid research is necessary to put the findings of language and education research into proper perspective, and presents a brief overview of good research design and related statistical concepts in deliberately non-technical language.
