Abstract

Abstract There is no entity equivalent to a private foundation under English law. However, private foundations are popular wealth management vehicles and are frequently used by international families for management of and succession to multi-jurisdictional assets. This article examines the competing considerations when trying to understand how private foundations are characterised as a matter of English law, and as a result how they may be treated for tax purposes in the UK.
