Abstract

Hypothyroidism is a condition where your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and feeling cold. Globally, the lack of iodine in the environment is the leading cause of hypothyroidism. However, in regions where there is enough iodine, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder is the most common cause. Risk factors include having a family history of thyroid disease, being over 6o years and being female. Diagnosis done with a simple blood test that measures the levels of serum free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). High TSH and FT4 levels usually indicate Hypothyroidism. Even daily medication with synthetic thyroid hormone (levothyroxine), regular follow up with your doctor is important to monitor your TSH level and adjust the dosage of medication as needed.
