Abstract

This chapter discusses potential music career opportunities including teaching, performing, recording and production, and working within therapeutic and administrative settings. Different music degree programs including pre-professional degrees (music education, music therapy, performance, digital music and production), liberal arts degree programs, and masters and doctoral degrees are discussed. Also included is information about different degree titles (i.e., Bachelor of Music, Arts, Fine Arts, or Science; Master of Music, Arts, Fine Arts, or Education; and Doctorate of Philosophy and Doctorate of Musical Arts) as well as Performer’s Certificates and Artist’s Diplomas. Finally, the chapter includes hypothetical student scenarios, showing how certain student interests or characteristics may influence degree and career decision making. Questions for discussion and an assignment complete the chapter.
