Abstract

Knowledge, technology and information sharing is one of these areas that have significantly affected 21 st century students learning process. In this environment, computers and advanced technology play an important supporting role. This research proposes a method to develop and enhance the understanding of fundamental principles of structural analysis using Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools. The study focuses on evaluating the effects of various gravity and lateral loads on portal frames and their relationship to basic static equilibrium equations. BIM tools promote the understanding of structural analysis concepts such as the force equilibrium, support reactions, shear force, and bending moment diagrams. Digital tools, such as Revit Structure and Robot, aid in the investigation and correlation between simple structural systems and static equilibrium equations to understand the conceptual behavior of portal frames. By conceptually understanding the behavior of frames experiencing load combinations, various complex structural computations can be approximated by static equilibrium equations or merely relate to simply supported beam or fully fixed structure. This method will allow engineering students to develop deep learning and long-term retention environment in which conceptual thinking is a core activity.
