Abstract

This Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) discusses the structure, organisation, and motivation of drug trafficking in prison, as well as the supply route and how these evolve, which could be key in developing strategies to restrict the supply of drugs in prisons. Literature within this area is limited, specifically research into prison drug markets and distribution, despite it being a significant focus within policies within custodial settings. The aims of this REA were achieved, and the findings have been divided into structure, organisation and motivation of drug trafficking and supply as well as distribution routes, which have then been subdivided into further themes. The insight and understanding provided in the current review, could inform the development and implementation of effective management strategies for drug trafficking in prison, including interventions for this population. Additionally, these findings could be used to aid Forensic Psychologists in providing consultancy, conducting research, as well as assessing and understanding the criminogenic needs for this population.
