Abstract

Abstract This paper traces the involvement of the mine surveyor with ore estimation procedures from the days when the art was simply a matter of sample lengths and assays being converted into tonnage and grade to the present time where an apparently highly sophisticated programme approach is used. The author suggests that there is a tendency to accept that these computer-based methods have resolved all the problems of resource evaluation. It is easy to gain the impression that such programmes have already taken into account errors in geological input, drill core data, sampling methods, volumes, assays, etc..
