Abstract

The commissioning and maintenance requirements for cables and lines are generally less onerous than for other items of plant. However cables and lines are subject to, and are a source of, induced voltages arising from electric and magnetic fields, the effect of which needs to be contemplated before any work is carried out. This chapter therefore examines the practical effects and implications of electric and magnetic fields on the design, operation, commissioning and maintenance requirements of high-voltage cables, overhead lines and auxiliary cables and connected equipment. Reference should be made to Chapter 3 for discussion of the theoretical concepts.
