Abstract

In the vast body of literature on the economics of underdevelopment the concepts of disguised unemployment and underemployment1 have been featured prominently, especially during the 1950's. However, although the term underemployment is still frequently used as a matter of convenience to designate a certain kind of problem allegedly associated with overpopulated, low income countries, theoretical enthusiasm about these concepts has of late somewhat dwindled.
