Abstract

Undercover law enforcement stress has been a long recognized but little understood phenomenon receiving minimal attention in the literature. Utilizing preliminary data from interviews with 28 undercover operatives in Georgia, this study understands the undercover role as analogous to that of the naturalistic field researcher. This analogy reveals a number of organizational features of undercover law enforcement which makes this line of work particularly stressful. The academic field research analogy is thereby suggestive of stress‐reducing policy innovations for law enforcement agencies utilizing undercover strategies.
