Abstract

This chapter is based on PhD research titled ‘How can healthcare be a lens to understand the repression of sexual and gender diverse communities in Bangladesh?’ at the School of Social Work, Massey University, New Zealand. The purpose of this chapter is to explain experiences based on challenges, overcoming strategies, and learnings as a researcher throughout the PhD fieldwork and data collection. Qualitative methods such as interviews, a focus group discussion, and key informant interviews were employed to collect data. The major challenge in my fieldwork was to develop trust and gain access to sexual and gender diverse communities who live invisibly in Bangladesh. Volunteering was essential to get involved with these communities to build networks and recruit participants. This chapter will be of interest to qualitative researchers, particularly those who study stigmatized communities so that they can anticipate potential challenges in the field and plan strategies to address them.
