Abstract

Background The Sustainable Development Goals created an absolute goal of ending preventable child deaths and reducing overall under-five mortality (U5M) to less than 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030(1). Between 1990 and 2015, Kenya saw a decrease in U5M of nearly 50% to 51 per 1,000 livebirths(2). However, regional variability is striking with county-level rates ranging from 20 to well over 100 per 1,000 livebirths(2,3). The Lwala Community Alliance (LCA) is a community-led organization in rural western Kenya in the former Nyanza province.
