Abstract

The need to improve the subgrade of a highway becomes urgent when the vehicle load exceeds the carrying capacity of the soil. Industrial waste, that increase every day, was proposed in this study as an additive or stabilizer to improve the carrying capacity of the subgrade. Testing was done through laboratory experiments of the mixing original soil with Silica Sand waste and Dust Sand Foundry waste in certain compositions. To test the mechanical properties, the Unconfined Compression Strength Test based on ASTM standards was conducted. The unconfined compression strength (qu) value of the original soil was 0.289 kg/cm2. The highest qu value was shown in the composition of the soil mixture with 2.5% SS and 7.5% DSF which was 0.347 kg/cm2. The qu value increased by 20.07% from the qu value of the original soil, and showed a mechanical improvement in stabilizing soil.
