Abstract

Using hybridization experiments the number of rRNA genes was determined in liver and tail muscle of Xenopus larvae during thyroxine-induced metamorphosis. In both tissues the amount of rDNA remained unchanged and was identical to that of adult erythrocyte DNA. Hence, an increase in the number of rDNA templates cannot account for the enhanced synthesis of rRNA during hormone-induced metamorphosis.
