Abstract
This entry introduces uncertainty management theory (UMT). Uncertainty occurs across patients' healthcare interactions in the context of complex systems, diagnosis, treatment, and medical knowledge. UMT is a tool to help individuals navigate the uncertainty of the healthcare system. UMT takes a multiprocess approach for those negotiating uncertainty, including (i) seeking or avoiding information, (ii) adapting to chronic uncertainty, and (iii) seeking assistance or social support. Since its development, within the health context, UMT has been applied to HIV/AIDS, cancer, organ transplantation, Alzheimer's disease, and rare diseases. The entry concludes with the theory's limitations and future directions for research on uncertainty management.
