A simple start: A tungsten carbene 3, 2-trimethylsilyloxyfuran (4), and an enantiopure aldehyde 5 provide easy access to enantiopure butenolides 2. The metal carbene increases the accepting character of the CC bond and allows further transformations into butenolide structures such as 1.
