Abstract

There are more than 600 gigatonnes of economically recoverable coal in known world deposits. As coal production rises, the volume of coal trading round the world will grow until by early in the next century the combined international trade in coal and liquefied gas will be equal to today's international oil trade. The coal industry will have to put in a maximum effort to cope with the undesirable environmental effects of intensified coal utilization, such as stockpiles, washery wastes, ash disposal, flue emissions and transportation problems through populous areas. The coal industry is prepared to recognise these problems and apply all possible solutions to strip coal of its inherent problems, both in new mining techniques and in cleaning procedures at the mine. A survey of potential techniques, and of techniques already available is given.
