Abstract

The comparison of hysteretic with non-hysteretic soils should use an unbiased single mean soil retention curve as a basis for comparison. When such an unbiased comparison is made, the actual effect of hysteresis can be shown to be insignificant in actual vertical soil water movement and transport over longer periods of time. This is in contrast to the implications of the conclusions drawn in the recent work of Vereecken et al. as well as that of Russo et al.
