Abstract
Biotechnology is the immediate target of half a dozen United Nations (UN) programs or agencies, which have proposed a sweeping variety of new and unnecessary regulations. The two major regulatory initiatives are a code of conduct promulgated by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on behalf of three other UN agencies and a biosafety protocol being drafted under the mandate of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is under the control of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).
