Abstract

Areas north of Naples harbour throughout the Angevin era a fair number of burial sites. These are mostly unknown, marked by erratic or recycled funereal sculptures, tombstones, as well as more complex burial monuments meant to host the remains of patricians and clerics. Such monuments and sculptures are spread among churches in major urban centres and museums in the area. The case of the anonymous episcopal tomb inside the deambulatory of the Aversa cathedral, traceable to the late 14th century, allows us to speculate on various issues connected with this particular category of works as a distinct socio-cultural context.
