Abstract
In the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca in Bologna there is a little-known painting of the 15th century depicting the Madonna and Child with St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Dominic, St. Luke, St. Matthias, St. Peter Martyr and St. Vincent Ferrer . It must be an altar frontal and the selection of the saints suggests that probably it was originally located in the Church of San Mattia. According to a local tradition the painter was Orazio di Jacopo, but this attribution must be rejected for both stylistic and chronological reasons. The author must have been a Bolognese master active c. 1460-1465, who initially trained in the Late Gothic tradition of Giovanni da Modena and subsequently looked with interest at the development in the local painting from the middle of 15th century, especially the works of Giovanni Francesco da Rimini.
