Summary
The rich collection of the Mingana Syriac, Garshūni and Arabic manuscripts, preserved in the University of Birmingham Library (England) contains numerous valuable, and in some cases unique, works. Volume II of the Catalogue in particular contains a number of seminal works on a variety of Maronite subjects mainly written in Arabic by Maronite priests and monks during the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. One of these manuscripts, Mingana 110 [Mingana Chr. Arab. 72] contains, inter alia, an interesting piece, being an Elegy in Arabic which describes the affliction and sorrow of the Virgin Mary at her separation from her beloved Son. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention of scholars and colleagues to the existence of this hitherto unknown and unpublished Arabic poem which was composed by a Maronite priest-monk living in Rome as well as to present the text of this apparently unique piece and to provide an analysis of its contents, linguistic features and value
