Abstract
The inscription published by E. Van Effenterre [Inscriptions archaiques cretoises, BCH 70 (1946), 602-603, recently in A.M. Hakkert (ed.), Cretica Selecta , II Graeca et Romana , Amsterdam 1990, 478-479] is reconsidered on the assumption that it is a bilingual text written in Greek and Eteocretan. Above all, the Eteocretan text (line 1) could offer new interpretations and corroborate the intuition of Cyrus H. Gordon who recognized that a word belonged to North-West Semitic Language at the end of the same text.
