Abstract
We analyze, through primary sources, the different steps that the Mexican post-intervention administrations (1867-1890) took towards the final settlement of the so called Spanish debt. This problem had lasted for almost 50 years and had been the stumbling block in Mexican-Spanish relations. At the same time we study the different diplomatic attitudes of both countries.

Herreros de Tejada representó a España en México durante dos años; debido tanto a los acontecimientos ocurridos en la península a partir de enero de 1873 como a los problemas que tuvo Lerdo de Tejada, nuevo presidente mexicano, con el poder legislativo para poder reabrir la legación en Madrid, no hubo una continuidad en las relaciones diplomáticas entre ambos países si no hasta la llegada, a fines de diciembre de 1875, del nuevo plenipotenciario, Emilio de Muruaga y Vildasoa. Tras haber firmado un contrato provisional con el representante de los tenedores de bonos de la deuda inglesa, Romero envió al Congreso un proyecto de arreglo de la deuda nacional que incluía las convenciones españolas[28], lo cual fue aprovechado por Muruaga para reclamar al gobierno mexicano que no hubiera consultado con el suyo, tal y como estaba estipulado en el artículo 14 de la Convención de 1853. Allá se las campanee y se cure las jaquecas que le causarán los españoles»39
