Abstract

Rachid Boudjedra's two novels, la Répudiation (1969) and lnsolation (1972) offer manifold analogies. Those are deliberate and serve a single purpose : to compose an essentially polemical work about a given situation, a given place. The third novel Topographic . . (1975) belongs to the same type. As a preliminary to a reading of the contents which we have also found to be common to all novels, we have thought it advisable to detect the similarities primarily on the plane of appearances. We have therefore, in this short essay, compared in the works the titles the unfolding and conducting of the plots, the interplay between probable phantasms and possible realities the obvious symbioses between the past and present avatars of the heroes who, all things considered, may be regarded as one and the same character. Experiences circumscribed in the same way, closely related alienations, the same achieving of distinction through the means of the grotesque, situations nearly identical arising in two countries, reinforce that formal unity.
