Abstract

A process of automatic regionalization based on internal migration flows. To regionalize a territory is to divide it into a set of regions, a region being composed of basic zones forming a compact continous space which consequently implies, a priori, the contiguity of aggregated zones. A double method is proposed here : - a descriptive method, in order to constituate homogenous regions according to the criteria retained, - an interactive method, to constitute regions with strong intra-regional interaction and with weak interregional interaction. In both cases, the method maximizes, at each step, the growth of an objective function and the optimal regionalization corresponds to the absolute maximum of this function. The use of a facultive threshold enables to obtain a greater number of regions. This method is applied here to migrants between the various French "regions de programme" for the 1968-1975 period.
