Abstract

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the United Nations has faced greater challenges, and thus public scrutiny and criticism, than perhaps at any other time in its history. Far from reducing the burden on the UN, there have been increasing calls for UN intervention and ‘Peacekeeping’ operations beyond both the capabilities and resources of the organisation. Having written a report on the British response to requests for contributions to UN Peacekeeping Operations, General Ramsbotham is uniquely placed to discuss the dramatic challenges facing the UN, the difficulties in meeting them and the vital importance to world stability that it be enabled to do so. Highlighting particular UK initiatives and responses, he explores the issues of planning and coordination, of aid, and military structures, underlining the responsibilities of each Member State for the full resourcing and support of the UN if it is to be the real and necessary force for stability and peace that the conflict‐ridden world requires.
