Abstract

The earliest known african Neogene Elephantoidea is described. It comes from the locality named Meswa Bridge (Kenya) in the Muhoroni Agglomerate Formation of Early Miocene age. It belongs to the zygolophodont mastodons ( Mammutidae) and is allocated to the species described from Moroto (Uganda) of Early or Middle Miocene age. A new genus is erected for the species: Eozygodon morotoensis ( Pickford & Tassy). One hypothesizes that this taxon is the sistergroup of other Mammutidae. A reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment of Meswa Bridge is proposed, based upon the associated fauna, in particular the continental gastropods.
