Abstract
New material from a small paromomyid found at Palette (Lower Eocene, France) comprises a muzzle and a mandible, each with its anterior incisor. The dental formula is 2123/1013. The anterior upper incisor is trilobate, with less well-formed lobes than in fuscus and lapparenti; this species is new and more primitive. The very large and high-crowned lower incisor shows these related species to differ from Phenacolemur, Ignatius and Elwynella. They are referred to the new genus Arcius, with Arcius rougieri n. sp. as type species. Similarity of the lower incisor with that of Soricids, implantation of the incisors and the development of the terminal cusps on the large upper incisor in the Arcius lineage suggest for this genus an insectivorous specialisation.
