Abstract

This article examines various examples of the influence of Persian culture in Aceh in the 17th century and tries to identify those coming from Mughal India. After looking for possible sources of transmission, and emphasizing the scarcity of references to Aceh in Mughal India, we focus on the Acehnese context of reception. We argue that these elements of Persian culture were part of a general tendency to borrow means of royal legitimation, whatever their origin may have been. What appears from this survey is that Aceh and the Mughal Court were clearly very distant and that the borrowing of these Persian elements has not survived the decline of Aceh’s international trade.
