Abstract

Geneviève Menant-Artigas : An unknown manuscript of «telliamed ». One of the strangest of the clandestine philosophical works of the French Eighteenth Century is Benoit de Maillet's Telliamed. Numerous manuscript copies circulated long before the first published edition in 1748 ; as the author constantly corrected his text, these copies vary considerably. The six manuscript copies known in France in 1980 were divided into two main groups ; however, there has now been found a seventh one in the library of Vire in Normandy, full of very interesting corrections, which make this manuscript a link between several different versions. Moreover, the Vire manuscript proves that there were at least four different states of Telliamed before the printed version.
