Abstract

After the coming into force of the edict of Nantes, a Montalbanese Catholic jurist, hostile to the League, Pierre de Beloy, published the Conference des edits de pacification des troubles emus au Royaume de France, par le fait de la religion (1600). This commentary of the text, article by article, welcomed the restoration of Catholicism in France but justified the (limited) freedom of public exercise of worship given to Protestants and their access to public office, and fervently pleaded for the peace of Religion and the plurality of confessions, thought to be provisional, indeed, in the kingdom.
