Abstract

This chapter is the overview of the book and introduces United Nations financial sanctions. It follows the history of collective security and financial sanctions by the League of Nations and the United Nations, with description of particular measures taken as financial sanctions. It accentuates the characteristics of the financial sanctions in comparison with trade embargoes, and follows the results of international conferences focusing on United Nations financial sanctions. It also presents overall issues concerning United Nations financial sanctions from positions of invocation, implementation, and application, suggesting how the United Nations contributes to achieving collective security through financial.
