Abstract

"An unknown Neo-Classical relief decoration : the pediment of the Congresso de los Disputados in Madrid (1848-1850) by Ponciano Ponzano, a student of Thorvaldsen", by Christiane Dotal While he is staying in Rome in 1848, having won die Prix de Rome in 1832, the Spanish sculptor Ponciano Ponzano (1813-1877) participates in a competition held by the Academia San Fernando for the achievement of the pediment of the Congresso de los Diputados. Thanks to his academic training in Madrid and his apprenticeship at Bertel Thorvaldsen's Roman studio, Ponzano creates a relief that stylistically matches his master's works of art. Such a relief, located in Madrid, testifies to a whole part of the artistic exchanges which took place in Rome in these days.
