Abstract

The United States is the most relevant actor within NATO and has conditioned Spanish participation in the organization since its accession 40 years ago. The article analyzes Spanish participation in NATO from the US perspective. To do this, it focuses on different factors such as the public statements of US leaders in bilateral meetings, the position of US public opinion and the analysis of various objects of debate such as defense spending, Spanish strategic assets, its participation in the different missions implemented by the organization and the Spanish position on issues and regions of interest to the United States. Despite the statements by US leaders about the Spanish role and the positive image of Spain in US public opinion, there is significant room for its improvement.
