Abstract

Objective To investigate the levels of insulin (INS),insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and adiponectin in the cord blood of neonates with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR),and assess the effect of the endocrine environment on IUGR.Methods Sixty newborn infants were selected (IUGR group),thirty normal birth weight infants were selected as control group. The levels of INS,IGF-1 and adiponectin in the cord blood were measured. Results Umbilical cord serum levels of INS,IGF-1 and adiponectin in the IUGR group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P <0.05 ).Birth weight was positively correlated with umbilical cord serum INS,IGF-1 and adiponectin levels ( P < 0.05).Conclusions The levels of INS,IGF-1 and adiponectin in the cord blood are correlated with fetal weight. They are closely related to human fetal growth. They can provide clincical guidance for early diagnosis and treatment of intrauterine growth retardation(IUGR). Key words: Intrauterine growth retardation; Insulin ; Insulin-like growth factor-1 ; Adiponectin ; Neonate
