Abstract

In contrast to interstitial hepatitis which often accompanies septicemia, solitary liver abscesses are rare in newborn infants. Thirteen cases appear in the literature. A single recent report implicates an umbilical venous catheter as the responsible agent. The present observations provide clinical as well as postmortem evidence which again strongly incriminates an umbilical venous catheter. See figure in PDF file Case Report A 2,610-gm male Caucasian infant of a gestational diabetic mother, delivered electively at "term" by cesarian section, developed respiratory distress and was referred to the High Risk Nursery of University Hospital on October 26, 1970, a few hours after birth. No instrumentation was performed before transfer.
