Abstract

According to World Economic Forum, oil industry is passing through its worst crisis in the last three decades and companies need to focus on cost and improving their operations efficiency. A common approach for this purpose is continuous improvement, but with current low level of resources availability, some sort of priority order needs to be adopted for enhancements implementation. This work aims to help making best use of the available resources by proposing a guideline on how to develop and prioritize process improvement ideas and illustrate its use in an example. Development of this artefact was done using Design Science Research (DSR) methodology. Suggestion of most appropriate tools for prioritization on process improvement was proposed after a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) covering main data bases of several industries, including OnePetro. Was found that DMAIC (Define - Measure - Analyze - Improve - Control) is the most recommended tool for process improvement and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has good performance on prioritization, so the proposed method joins DMAIC and AHP in only one artifact. Based on that a step-by-step procedure has been tailor made for petroleum industry. To verify method´s accuracy, it has been applied on a Tubing Conveyed Perforation (TCP) cell in Brazil ultra-deep-water environment. During SLR was noticed that interest about process improvement prioritization is on an increasing trend from 2007 till today, but vast majority of relevant articles are concentrated in only few industries and oil industry still not among them. The case study showed satisfactory results with proposed DMAIC process, using Delphi technique, helping to create 15 improvement ideas and prioritization order advised by AHP shows a good match with results achieved by their respective implementations. All these ideas together saved on average 25 hours of rig time for each TCP run (42% of operational time) and simultaneously increased process safety. This represents considerably more than 10MM USD for a field completion campaign on this type of environment. The novelty of the proposed integration between DMAIC and AHP is going to allow oil industry to continue evolving, even during difficult times, when industry is suffering with resources constrains. Commodity industry is known for being cyclic and another crisis is certain to come, so knowing what investment to prioritize is going to bring the best return rates to the industry at any point of time.
