Abstract

This article deals with the social and historical route taken by Brazilian Popular Music – MPB – up to the appearing of Chico Buarque de Hollanda in the music scene. The importance of the theme is due to the fact that it reviews many musical moments and how these relate to Brazilian identity. His melodious compositions are characterized by classic aesthetic aspects – aimed at a vertical reading of his poetry and melody, as well as by popular features, such as rhythm polyphony aimed at establishing a dialogue with the audience.
