Abstract

Ultraviolet spectral energy distributions and intensities of several types of xenon arcs were measured and monitored both with and without short wavelength cutoff filters. The spectral radiance of the unfiltered high-pressure xenon arcs is similar to that of extraterrestrial sunlight, but requires filtering by adequate thickness of Pyrex glass to simulate the ultraviolet distribution of the sun at the earth’s surface. During the first 100 hours of use, solarization of the filters is the major factor affecting the spectral distribution of the filtered arcs and is a significant factor in decreasing the total uv intensity. Metallic deposits, inside the arc due to sputtering of the tungsten electrodes and outside the arc due to contaminants in the water coolant system, also affect the intensity and spectral distribution.
