Abstract

To the Editor: The Global Solar Ultraviolet Index (UVI), developed as part of the World Health Organization's INTERSUN program, derives a ground-level erythemal risk score based on the magnitude of solar spectral irradiance penetration through ozone, clouds, and aerosols.1 Sun-protection recommendations begin at UVI 3 (range 1-≥11). The risk of pathologic ultraviolet exposure increases when seemingly mild environmental conditions, such as nonextreme temperatures and overcast weather, obviate intuitive protective behavior.
