Abstract

A spectrophotometric method for determining microgram quantities of uranium in concentrated hydrochloric acid is given. The method is based on the absorbance of a chloride complex of uranium at 24l6 m mu . Beer's law is obeved in the uranium concentration range of less than 1 to 60 ppm. Interfering ions are removed by one or more extractions of the uranium into ethyl acetate using aluminum nitrate as a salting agent. The extent of interference of 55 ionic species after a single extraction is tabulated. The absorption spectra of uranium(VI) in concentrated hydrochloric, sulfuric, perchloric, and acetic acids are given. (auth)
