Abstract

The theory of the electronic transitions of iridium hexafluoride is briefly reviewed. Then, we present the ultraviolet absorption spectrum of this molecule in the gas phase over the 20 000–50 000 cm −1 region. Some new electronic transitions are observed. Their physical origin is discussed and some values of the v 1( A 1 g ) totally symmetric stretching mode frequency in these highly excited electronic states are given.
