Abstract

Ultrastructure of the bulb sensilla in the sensory pit of the third palpal segment of male and female Simulium arcticum Malloch is described. The bulbs are unsocketed and arise directly from the thin cuticle of the pit. Each bulb is singly innervated and has a complex lamellated dendrite. Cuticle of all regions of the bulb is highly porous; the pores have pore tubules associated with them. A hypothesis is presented that the lamellated dendrite of the bulb sensilla is sensitive to CO2 in biting Nematocera in general.
