Abstract
The haustoria in the caeomoid telial stage of the rust fungus Kunkelia nitens are more similar to those reported in the spermogonial and aecial stages of other rust fungi than to those reported in uredinial and telial stages. The haustoria are hyphal-like but possess only a single septum located at the proximal end of the haustorium. This septum possesses a small central pore which is plugged with electron-dense material. A distinct collar of host cell wall material is present at the proximal end of the haustorium. A haustorial sheath separates the haustorial wall from the invaginated plasma membrane of the host cell. The haustoria do not appear to exit from infected host cells.
