Abstract

Electron microscopic observations were performed on signet ring cells in cutaneous metastases of two patients with gastric carcinoma. The signet ring cells seen in these cases differed markedly. By comparing similarities in their features to normal gastric cellular constituents, they were classified as one of two types; the pyloric gland cell type or the goblet cell type. In general, pyloric gland-type signet ring cells are found in the mucous secreting carcinoma that has invaded the mucosa of the pyloric region, whereas the goblettype signet ring cells are observed in almost all mucous secreting gastric carcinomas with intestinalization of gastric mucosa. In both cases, the primary sites of carcinoma could be correctly predicted by electron microscopic and histochemical studies of the signet ring cells in the cutaneous metastases.
