Abstract

The penetration of highly resistant oat leaves by an isolate of the maize anthracnose fungus Colletorichum graminicola has been studied at an ultrastructural level. Conidial germination of C. graminicola occurred 10 to 14 h after inoculation on oat leaves and appressoria were formed after 14 to 18 h. Penetration pegs and papillae were present 24 h after inoculation. In 48 h the cuticle and epidermal walls were breached but not the underlying papillae. After 72 h the protoplasts of invaded cells appeared to be disorganized and the vacuolated electron-dense hyphae of the fungus were restricted to the first two to three adjacent cells.
