Abstract

Aspects of the external morphology of the cleistothecium as well as various stages of ascosporogenesis of Ajellomyces dermatitidis as observed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy are described and illustrated. The most conspicuous surface features of the cleistothecium are the peridial coils and the hyphae which arise from the tightly coiled spirals to form the supporting matrix of the fruiting body proper. The hyphae of the spirals are flattened perpendicularly to the axis of the helix. No conspicuous surface sculpturing was observed for either the spirals, ascogenous hyphae, or hyphae of the cleistothecial matrix. The ascospores develop from haploid nuclei which are seen in association with 2 pairs of parallel membranes enclosing the nuclei as well as mitochondria, ribosomes and endoplasmic reticulum.
