Abstract

Williams J. B. 1988. Ultrastructural studies on Kronborgia (Platyhelminthes; Neoophora): the spermatozoon. International Journal for Parasitology 18: 477–483. Threadlike spermatozoa of Kronborgia isopodicola were found to be enveloped by fine processes from the testis epithelium. The spermatozoon has an elongate nucleus with relatively diffuse chromatin, two wholly incorporated 9 + “1” axonemes and a complete cylinder of peripheral microtubules. The axonemes have a staggered arrangement. Outer arms are missing from the A tubules of the doublets. The spermatozoon possesses two rodlike mitochondrial derivatives, which show randomly located swellings containing membrane accumulations. Phylogenetic implications of the spermatozoon morphology are discussed.
