Abstract

SummaryUltrastructure of pericarpic cells of unripened and ripened tomato fruits have been studied. In unripened fruit, cell wall has compact microfibrillar structure with a distinct middle lamella. Plastids have tubular thylakoids with a few plastoglobuli. Mitochondria have well organized cristae. Golgi complex is present near the cell wall and rough endoplasmic reticulum is in abundance. In ripened fruit, cell wall has loose microfibrillar structure and well organized middle lamella is absent. Plastids have a few or no thylakoids with many plastoglobuli. Mitochondria lack well organized cristae. Cytoplasm is highly vacuolated.
